A coalition of Civil Society groups in Nigeria under the aegis of Action Group on Free Civic Space (AGFCS) has called for an urgent dispassionate probes of all the alleged human rights abuses and brutalities at the Tiger Base Unit of the Imo State Police Command.
In a statement in Abuja on Friday 1st May, 2026, a copy which was made available to NIGERIAN NEWSGUIDE, AGFCS condemned in strongest terms recent reports pointing to a disturbing pattern of arbitrary arrests, unlawful detention, torture, degrading treatment, and poor detention conditions allegedly associated with the unit. These allegations according to the group raise serious concerns about the abuse of police powers and the violation of the fundamental rights guaranteed under Nigeria’s 1999 constitution as amended.
Action Group on Free Civic Space has at least 32 civil society organisations drawn from across Nigeria, the 32 CSOs jointly signed the press release demanding immediate investigation of the alleged human rights abuses at Imo State Police Command, Tiger Base Unit.
