The Nigerian Police is in a mourning mood at the moment following the unexpected death of the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 9 Umuahia, Mr Kanayo Uzuegbu.
NIGERIAN NEWSGUIDE learnt that the highly disciplined top Police officer passed on over the weekend precisely on Saturday May 30, 2026 after a brief battle with cancer.
AIG Uzuegbu hailed from Umuaka in Njaba Council Area of Imo state.
He joined the Nigerian Police as Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1992, rising to occupy numerous key positions in the Nigerian Police Force.
Uzuegbu was Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of several divisions.

AIG Kanayo Uzuegbu was the Commissioner of Police in charge of Enugu State Police Command in 2023 and CP in charge of ICT operations Force Headquarters Abuja.
The fine officer held a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy from the University of Port Harcourt, a Higher Diploma in Strategic Studies from the University of Maiduguri and an M.Sc in Peace and Conflict Resolution from the University of Nigeria Nsukka.
AIG Uzuegbu had a distinguished 34-year career across multiple state and zonal commands and Force Headquarters Abuja before he became the AIG zone 9 Umuahia in March this year.
Abia state Governor Dr Alex Otti in his condolence message described AIG Uzuegbu as a “diligent and hardworking officer who gave his best to the Nigerian Police”
Uzuegbu only took over from Suleiman Amudu Yusuf as AIG zone 9 on March 9, 2026. He was aged 60 years.
